one weekend, I was at home in Bordeaux, connected over SSH to an OVH server, moving about ten client accounts from an old Debian 10 machine to a new myVesta server.
Nothing particularly complicated about the migration itself, but it was pretty time-consuming. I had to check the vhosts one by one, deal with PHP-FPM configs that never quite match between versions, and then there were the Maildirs, which took forever to copy in the background.
All in all, I think I spent around six hours waiting for transfers across those ten accounts, with quite a few pauses while rsync was doing its thing. Not exactly how I had planned to spend my Saturday, but everything went over cleanly in the end and I didn't lose any accounts or mail.
While waiting for the Maildirs to finish, I also ended up looking at some free gold and silver tools I sometimes use to keep an eye on a small part of my savings in metals. Nothing particularly interesting to report there, it was just something to do while watching rsync crawl along.
I guess that's the reality of server migrations sometimes lots of logs, a terminal window, and finding something else to do while the transfers finish.
